I had never seen a Kyogen or a Noh performance before. I found the costume designs and characters were quite intricate. It was a little difficult for me to understand portions of the Kyogen performance of Kaki Yamabushi due to it being in “old fashioned” Japanese. I enjoyed the antics of the young monk in training as the farmer tricked him into making a fool out of himself. The Noh performance felt far more dramatic and quite darker in tone. It was very useful to have guidance of the Noh performance in English because dialogue was mainly sung. I enjoyed the explanation of the tachikata and found the fluidity of the shite actors quite impressive. Overall it was a wonderful performance and it opened my mind to older Japanese arts that I have overlooked before.

I really enjoyed watching the play. I was surprised that even though the performers were not in a Noh performance theatre, the play was still performed excellently. The voices of the actors were amazing – they had so much control of their voices. Also, I was glad to see that an English description was also provided. This really helped me to understand the concept of the Noh performance. I was really moved by the story and the beauty of the performance. From the music, to the outfits, to the stage, everything was wonderful. Thank you.
