Fire Drill Experience at Kita-Kamakura Joshi Gakuen.

Just before the Golden Week, the fire drill was carried out. Teachers were already briefed in advance at what time the fire bell would go off. To my amusement, at 9.00 a.m. on the dot, the bell went off and I heard the shuffling of tables and chairs from the floors above, indicating that the students are getting ready to evacuate the building. From the main teacher’s room, I follow the other teachers to exit the building and follow the path to the evacuation site. As we made our way out of the building, I watched the students quietly exit from several places from the school. Each class walked in organised lines, led by a flag bearer.

The evacuation site, I was told, was at the school’s field. I didn’t know that the field was actually not connected to the school and it was quite far away! We had to walk up a hill and go through a small patch of jungle before we got there. However, I was largely impressed by the systematic and organised manner of the fire drill. At every road  junction or crossing, specific teachers were in charge of making sure that the students were heading in the right direction. As we arrived at the field, we were greeted by the teacher leading the fire drill and a headcount was done. At the back of the field, a team of teachers and staff were in charge of the first aid and medical care for the students.

A few minutes later, there was a fire extinguisher drill where a demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher was shown to the students. I found this particularly useful for people because these are basic safety tips we should all take note of. I found the fire drill impressive because all the teachers and students were calm and organised. They all knew what to do and where to go. This was a good show of teamwork on the end of the school. The fire extinguisher demonstration was also great as it is a useful and possibly life-saving skill to have in emergencies.
