Summer has arrived, the warm weather is here, and it is time to go outside! Or, maybe not. Last Thursday, the annual sports festival was organized by the school and it was held at the school field. As predicted, it really was a scorching hot day that I felt the weather was hot enough even to fry an egg on our heads. Despite the heat, the students were still able to perform their best and show great perseverance, determination and excellent team spirit throughout the day.

There were many events and games held on that day. For example, the kibasen (Calvary Battle), the o-tama korogashi (a huge ball-rolling race), obstacle race, tug-of-war, three-legged race, and running events which included sprints, middle and long-distance runs. My favourite event among all was the kibasen. I found it very interesting because this game requires more than just physical fitness such as speed, balance, and mobility, but it is also essential for the players to develop proper strategy and teamwork which is necessary to beat the opponent’s team.

Apart from sports contests, there were other events that the students took part in such as the parade and dance. The parade gave me a good laugh as some of the themes paraded were really creative and entertaining. Each class had its own theme and I was really surprised to learn that the homeroom teachers had joined in the fun too! It took me some time to recognize the teachers but I must say that all of them looked incredibly amazing in their costumes.

Besides that, Kimberly and I were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to learn the quadrille dance. It is a dance that is performed by four couples in a rectangular formation. Although it has simple steps and patterns, remembering the dance sequence was a challenge for me. All in all, it was a fun and memorable experience dancing with the students. I am glad that I have learnt something new from them!
